|Service Maintenance Worker I|
|The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform manual work which does not require a high degree of manipulative skill or an acquired skill or previous experience. Work is generally performed under the immediate direction of a supervisor, but many types of work assigned may be very routine and repetitive in nature, and after once learned can be carried out with some independence.|
|The following list is not exhaustive and other duties may be required and assigned.
Manually picks up and loads trash (brush, tree limbs, leaves, etc.) onto open body truck, rear loader packer and leaf vacuum truck from curbside along streets for removal and transportation to the landfill for proper disposal using hand tools such as forks, shovels, rakes and brooms.
May be assigned to work garbage collection routes as needed.
Performs grounds maintenance duties to include mowing grass, planting and watering grass, flowers, shrubs and trees, spreading fertilizer, mulch and dirt using weed-eaters, push mowers, edgers, and various hand tools.
Performs night watchman duties including making rounds of assigned areas, locking and unlocking buildings, checking HVAC equipment, and reporting unusual activity or unauthorized entry to appropriate personnel.
Performs custodial work including cleaning floors, carpets and restrooms, emptying trash cans, and washing windows.
Works on trim crew pulling brush, clearing limbs and sweeping up.
Works on litter crew; performs nursery and golf course duties.
Patches potholes in streets using rake, shovel and asphalt; rakes and tamps asphalt and spreads aggregate on street repair projects.
Digs ditches or trenches for water pipes, sign posts, etc; digs in search of leaks in pipes; using a pick, shovel, spade or other hand tools.
Cleans drainage ditches and storm drainpipes using rake, fork, shovel and weed eater.
Loads, unloads, delivers, moves, sets up and takes down furniture, equipment, supplies, chairs, tables, podiums and tents.
Directs traffic for street work crews using sign paddles, cones, and flags.
Loads and unloads trucks of dirt or construction materials.
|Ability to move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less).
Ability to move light objects (less than 20 pounds) long distances (more than 20 feet).
Ability to bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time.
Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions.
Ability to learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation.
Ability to work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Ability to work cooperatively with other employees and the public.
Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions.
Ability to perform manual work for extended periods of time.

|Some positions require the use of departmental vehicles on departmental business. Individuals must be capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. |
